Welcome
The Philosophy Students' Association at
UBC
The Philosophy Students' Association (PSA) is the AUS Club
devoted to undergraduate students in philosophy at UBC. We currently hold one
seat at department meetings, and one seat on the department curriculum
committee. We keep undergraduates of philosophy informed of upcoming talks,
colloquia, department news, calls for papers, scholarships, and other things
through our email list and events page. We also run an online undergraduate
journal, the Prolegomena.
The PSA organizes recreational and social
gatherings in order to unite UBC's students of Philosophy. These events provide
the ideal forum for interesting exchanges as well as both academic and social
enjoyment. The association also represents philosophy students amongst other
groups at UBC, including the Philosophy department, the University
administration and other student groups. Furthermore, the association seeks to
enrich philosophy students by providing a forum for philosophical discussion.
We seek to create an inspiring and enlightening environment for all
students of philosophy. Please feel free to contact us at philosophy.students.ubc@gmail.com
if you wish to become a member.
UPCOMING EVENT:
Filosophy Fridays are BACK!
First meeting: February 3rd 2012 (Friday) 5pm @ Cocoa Nymph (3739 W. 10th Ave--at Alma)
Come hangout and discuss some philosophy or just get to know your fellow PSAers better. Hope to see everyone there.
PSA Reading Group:Thousand Plateaus by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari
First meeting: February 1st, 2012 (Wednesday) 5pm @ Woodward Library Room 20-D
Thousand Plateaus is not a book where the authors preach their wisdom to their readers. Thousand Plateaus is a book written and read by everybody. Thousand Plateaus is read by certain military groups in the Middle East for the purpose of imagining a new concept of "land." Thousand Plateaus is read by New York club musicians for inventing new music. Thousand Plateaus is read by Google executives who need that new neuronal network connection in their brains. Thousand Plateaus, in short, disperses ideas and unites persons.
All students from any discipline are welcome to join our PSA book club. If you have never heard of this book, that is not a problem. Curiosity is all you need. For our first meeting, we will open a random page, read for 2 to 3 pages from there, and discuss what is going on. That is the proper way in which the book is supposed to be read. We guarantee that this will be a mind-blowing hour for you.
Members will have to buy the full book (to recognize and respect copyright guidelines). However, please keep your receipt. PSA is looking into reimbursing students' book purchases depending on the total number of participants. Details to come at the first meeting.
Cheers!
